結論 ＝ ちやほやする / 余計な心配をする
Phrasal Verb は難しい。今日は fuss over somebody という表現を見かけたのでメモ。
用例①
まずはオンライン辞書からの引用。余談だが、オンライン辞書の例文はかなり使い勝手が良い。これまで Vocabulary.com というサイトを経由して例文を探していたのだが、理解を高めるという意味では（当然かもしれないが）辞書のほうがはるかに使い勝手が良い。ただし、辞書に載っている例文は古いかもしれないので、生きた文章を探すという観点では引き続き Vocabulary.com を使う予定（そもそも、生きた文章や会話の中にある不明語を取り扱っているこのブログのメモにおいてはその比較すらあまり意味を持たないが）
閑話休題。
She's always fussing over that son of hers as if he were a little boy.
あ～あるある！と強く思う例。あるあるすぎて即興で "My mother in law is always fussing over his son as if he were a little boy even he got married recently at the age of 32." なんて例文が作れたりしますね。
用例②
次は Washington Post の記事からの引用。
The constant preening and tweaking means that running for office is the equivalent of every day being your wedding — with everyone fussing over you constantly.
メモの目的とは逸れますが "the euivalent of every day being your wedding" という表現もなかなか強烈。それをもって "every one fussing over you constantly" としているのですが。
用例③
最後に Reuters の記事からの引用。
One source with direct knowledge of the matter said the likelihood of Toshiba meeting its March 14 deadline was 'fifty-fifty' as Westinghouse auditors and lawyers were fussing over details.
