結論: ply a/ones’s trade で仕事に勤しむ(diligently)、車やバスや船が運航する
以前から書いているが、短い語数の不明語句に出会えた時にはゾッとする。今回は ply が分からなかったので、メモ。よく知っている単語だと apply や supply に ply が内包されているものの、初見では検討もつかず。
用例①
まずは Wall Street Journal の例。ここでは結論の最初に書いた ply one's trade という表現で使われている。色々な例に当たってみたが、この表現は覚えておく必要がありそう。
Not long after, in the early 1960s, Bill Hinshaw began plying his trade as one of the thousands of Cobol programmers working in banks across the world.
用例②
次は Reuters の記事。Uber の IPO に絡む話。ここでは、車 (Uber) が運航するという意味で使われている。
But the city estimates there are roughly 10 times that many Uber drivers plying its streets, many of them immigrants or refugees.
用例③
次に高級紙 The Economist での使用例。先に見た Reuters の例と同じく、車 (トラック) が運航するという意味。
From those, it organises a pan-India relay system, where drivers ply the four- to five-hour journey from their “home” station to the next.
用例④
次に Washington Post の用例。ここでも船 (tourist boats) が運航するという意味。
Cairo itself seems a noisy but somewhat joyless city, where half-filled tourist boats ply the Nile and Egyptians seem united, above all, in resenting the United States.
用例⑤
最後に The Guardian の例。ここでも船が運航する(往復する)という意味
She also said records show the existence of a slave trade route from Sierra Leone to Annapolis, plied by British and American ships.
用例②から⑤で見たように、乗り物は車･バス･ボート･船と様々ですが、文脈から判断すると「あるルートを往復する」というニュアンス。
なんかスッキリした。
